Slow Food Maui to hold Coffee Recipe Contest
KAHULUI – In honor of 200 years of coffee cultivation in Hawaii, Slow Food Maui is partnering with the Maui Coffee Association to present a Maui Coffee Recipe Contest as part of its “Seed to Cup” event planned at the University of Hawaii Maui College on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Entries for both savory and sweet coffee dishes will be accepted from 11 a.m. to noon at the UHMC Maui Culinary Academy located in the Pa’ina Building.
Judging will take place from noon to 2:30 p.m. Winners for “Best Savory,” “Best Sweet” and “Best Overall” dishes will be announced at 3 p.m.
Prizes include a gift basket valued at $200 for the top overall dish, and gift baskets valued at $150 each for the best savory and sweet entries.
Coffee recipes will be scored in four areas for a total of 30 points. The use of Maui or Hawaii grown coffee as the main ingredient and taste carry ten points each, and originality and presentation are worth five points each.

This year marks the 200th year of cultivation of coffee in the islands.
It is currently cultivated on all the major islands; about 6,300 acres are in production statewide. There are about 40 farms in Maui County that produce coffee.
