Ocean Awareness Training series slated in Lahaina
LAHAINA – Another free Ocean Awareness Training class series begins in June in West and South Maui.
Classes will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on June 11, 13, 18 and 20 in the Whalers Village Museum in Kaanapali, and June 10, 12, 17 and 19 at the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary at 726 S. Kihei Road.

Local conservation, research and educational organizations on Maui are joining forces with the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary to offer this free four-class series to commercial marine tour operators and the community.
This training will provide participants with up-to-date knowledge to educate visitors about Hawaii’s unique marine environment.
Classes are designed to provide the latest research and resource conservation information and will cover the basics for anyone on the water or on shore talking with visitors, from commercial marine tour operators’ staff to community volunteers.
Series topics include “How Can a Happier Life Protect Maui’s Giant Manta Rays?”, the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, “Managing Maui’s Dynamic Shorelines,” “The West Maui Ridge to Reef (R2R) Initiative: What’s happening mauka to makai to reduce stress to our coral reefs and how you can be a part of the solution,” and “Know Before You Go: How to Access Real-Time Ocean Information on the PacIOOS Voyager.”
Course field day events will provide the chance for participants to receive hands-on experience with partner organizations and to learn more about how to get involved.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn about volunteer positions with the sanctuary or other activities, including fish, coral and water monitoring surveys, Kaanapali Makai Watch program, West Maui Ridge to Reef Initiative and more.
The public is welcome; registration is required due to limited space.
