Town to celebrate Banyan Tree’s 140th birthday

By Staff | Apr 18, 2013

Brought from India, Lahaina’s landmark Banyan Tree was only eight feet high at the time of planting. It now has a dozen main trunks and spreads over nearly an acre. Art fairs and community celebrations are held in the shady park beneath the tree.

LAHAINA – LahainaTown Action Committee will host the 140th Birthday Celebration of the Banyan Tree on Saturday and Sunday, April 20-21, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Arguably the most famous landmark in Lahaina, the tree was planted in 1873 by Sheriff William Owen Smith to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the first missionaries to Lahaina.

LahainaTown Action Committee invites all to come out and celebrate the 140th birthday of the Banyan Tree with birthday cake, live music, a silent auction, 25 Maui artists, magic, clowns and a Keiki Birthday Card Contest. Admission is free.

On Saturday, the silent auction will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

From 11 a.m. to noon, Magician Brenton Keith will perform interactive magic throughout the park, then take the stage from noon to 1 p.m.
