Sacred Hearts School to host Kindergarten Open House
LAHAINA – Sacred Hearts School in Lahaina will host a “Day in the Life of a Kindergartener” on Feb. 4-5 from 10 a.m. to noon.
For working parents who cannot make these dates, there will be another opportunity to visit the school on Wednesday, Feb. 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. This event is open to parents of all keiki in grades K-8.
All parents of preschoolers thinking about kindergarten choices are invited to come and enjoy a visit to the kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms at Sacred Hearts School.
Preschoolers will get a chance to be a “kindergartener” for a day, and parents will see a typical morning at Sacred Hearts School. Parents and preschoolers will meet SHS’ K-2 teachers, Wendy Coon, Dana Kirby and Tonata Lolesio, and Teacher’s Assistant Sara Kanemitsu.
A free, healthy school lunch will be served, catered by Penne Pasta Cafe.
Coon said, “The key to successful early learning is to make learning fun for the children. Young children learn best when they are engaged and enjoying themselves.”
At Sacred Hearts School, the staff believes that attitudes toward school and learning tend to form early on. If children enjoy kindergarten, they will carry that love of learning with them into their future school years.
The kindergarten experience lays the groundwork and shapes both a child’s future academic performance and a child’s attitudes toward school life.
At Sacred Hearts School, the staff believes that kindergarten cannot be looked at in isolation – it is important to create a link from one grade to the next.
Teachers work together to ensure that there is a bridge between each grade, and that every year, the children build upon what they have already learned and experienced.
Sacred Hearts School teachers are very experienced and keep their knowledge up-to-date. They stay abreast of developments in the field of child education by attending seminars, taking advanced classes and working together as a team to strive to bring to the classrooms the best possible educational experience.
A graduate of Sacred Hearts School, Coon is in her tenth year teaching at SHS. She has a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education. Her two children are both students at Sacred Hearts.
Kirby has been teaching first grade at Sacred Hearts School for six years. She has a total of ten years of teaching experience and has a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education. Her son is a student at the school.
Lolesio is in her tenth year of teaching at Sacred Hearts School and has a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education. Her son is a student at SHS.
Kanemitsu is in her first year teaching at SHS. This is a homecoming for her, since she is a graduate of Sacred Hearts. She has seven years of experience in the Hawaii Department of Education and ten years working in privately owned childcare.
Sacred Hearts School pledges to “care for each child’s mind, spirit and body.”
Academically, SHS students outperform the nation’s children in standardized tests, and more than 90 percent of its students go on to college.
SHS kindergarten students arrive at first grade able to read and ready to move to the next level.
Last spring, Sacred Hearts received the highest possible accreditation award by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and Western Educational Association.
Principal Susan Hendricks noted, “Spiritually, we care for our children by fostering a spirit of love and a sense of community. The main lesson our children learn is to love one’s neighbor. We instill in our students the importance of caring for the world around them (stewardship of the earth) and a sense of duty and love towards their fellow man.
“We nurture a sense of family at our school, and we employ a zero tolerance policy on bullying. We care about the health and safety of our children.”
In December, the school began its Healthy Food Initiative. The children receive healthy, nutritious, tasty lunches provided by Penne Pasta. At snack time, the school serves fresh fruit.
Sacred Hearts is located at 239 Dickenson St. in Lahaina. Call 661-4720 to register for the open house.
