IMAGINE meeting to focus on Lahaina Harborfront

By Staff | Jan 24, 2013

LAHAINA – The fifth public meeting of the community planning process for the Lahaina Harborfront will be held on Thursday, Jan. 31, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Pioneer Inn.

This meeting, led by transportation planner Alan Fujimori, will focus on ways to alleviate the congestion, traffic impacts and inadequate pedestrian access in the area.

The Lahaina Harborfront area is bounded by Market Street to the north, King Kamehameha III School to the south and Front Street to the east. The public is encouraged to attend; refreshments will be served.

This series of meetings, titled IMAGINE, is a nine-month project to develop a community vision and interpretive plan for the Lahaina Harborfront area.

Currently, conflicting and overlapping uses are eroding the historical, cultural and social ambiance, in addition to the public enjoyment of the area, according to Lahaina Restoration Foundation.

Community sentiments expressed at the previous meetings are, in order of priority: increase historic preservation and interpretation, recognize the sacredness of the area, alleviate transportation impacts and congestion, and make the area safe for all users.

IMAGINE is coordinated by Lahaina Restoration Foundation and supported by the county Planning Department.
