Theatre Theatre Maui announces changes
LAHAINA – Theatre Theatre Maui (TTM) welcomed two new members to its Board of Directors following a recent meeting.
The board consists of Officers Penny Wakida, president; ShaRon Fredy, vice president; Ann Marie Wilder, treasurer; and Ann Burkhalter, secretary. Members are Roy Butteling and newly elected Annabehl Sinclair-Delaney and Diane Racine.
At an earlier meeting this year, current Executive Director Louisa Shelton’s contract was renewed until spring 2013.
At that time, she will hand off that role to a yet-to-be-appointed executive director.
The nonprofit organization has been serving the West Side community since its formation in December 1991.
TTM’s mission is “to provide a full spectrum of hands-on theater experiences for the children and adults of the West Maui community.”
For 20 summers, a performing arts camp has been held in Lahaina filled with Maui youth that present public performances of a selected musical at the end of the five- to six-week program.
Shows presented have been original plays, adaptations and other professionally scripted musicals, including “Beauty and the Beast,” “Camp Rock” and “Wizard of Oz” in recent summers.
“We are delighted to continue serving our West Side community,” remarked President Wakida, who joined the board with Shelton in 1992, when their children participated in the first summer program, “Robin Hood.”
“This grassroots organization is now serving the next generation of youth, including my grandchildren and so many others in our community,” added Sinclair-Delaney, whose youngest child has participated in the past two summer programs.
“I became attracted to being more involved with the TTM organization as a way to make sure that the kids of the West Side have the same opportunities and access to performing arts as the rest of the island. Things don’t get done unless you start some kind of grassroots movement… we need to support getting our kids exposed to as many cultural programs as we can. Drama and music are so important in their learning process.”
Currently TTM is providing a Monday afterschool drama class at Lahaina Intermediate School in its fifth year of partnership with the Lahaina Complex Tutor Project.
Theatre Theatre Maui has also been actively collaborating with the Boys and Girls Club in Lahaina to provide “Improv” classes.
