LAHAINA – Forty-five years ago, a group of enthusiastic and talented local artists created an organization to support emerging artists.

Initially, the group consisted mostly of artists from the greater Lahaina area, but later included members from throughout Maui County.

The organization became known as Lahaina Arts Society, and in the present, it remains a thriving part of the Maui art scene.

Many of the LAS founding members and those who followed through the years became well-established artists with collectors not only on Maui but throughout the world in both private and corporate collections.

For the first time in recent history, Lahaina Arts Society will assemble a show featuring some of the initial founders and other well-known artists with former ties to Lahaina Arts Society.

The show, “Maui Masters,” will be held in the Banyan Tree Gallery in the Old Lahaina Courthouse from Oct. 1 through Nov. 4.

A reception for the participating artists and the general public will be held Saturday evening, Oct. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the gallery located near the Banyan Tree in Lahaina.

Come view the art, meet the artists and enjoy complimentary wine and pupus accompanied by live music.

Participating artists include George Allan, Randy Jay Braun, Jan Bushart, Mike Carroll, Michael Clements, Joe Fletcher, Betty Hay Freeland, Anna Good, Jack Hamilton, Julie Houck, Jim Kingwell, Fred Lorenzo, Ronaldo Macedo, Cheryl McElfresh, Susie Monroe, Sue Perry, Janet Spreiter, Michael and Monica Sweet, Martha Vockrodt Moran, Jamie Roth, Carleton Kinkade and Linda Whitmore.

These accomplished artists have agreed to donate the majority of each sale to the Lahaina Arts Association’s Art Outreach Program, which serves the youth of Maui County through ten free weekly art classes.

Six of the classes are offered on Maui in Hana, Wailuku, Paia, Kihei and Lahaina. The other four classes are held on Molokai at Kaunakakai Elementary School during regular school hours.

Lahaina Arts Association, a 501 (c)(3) charity, noted that its arts education programs are valuable to the children of the Maui community.

“Arts education is a powerful means for building artistic skills and cultivating lifelong appreciation of the arts. The benefits of arts education go far beyond building audiences and inspiring future artists. Research has demonstrated the value of arts education for early intellectual development and later academic achievement,” the group explained.

“Lahaina Arts Association wishes to thank the ‘Maui Masters’ for their continued active support of arts programs for the children of Maui County. The public is encouraged to join each of the ‘Maui Masters’ in their support by attending the art show and adding some of the best art on Maui to your personal art collections.”
