Public meeting slated on Planning Department fees
WAILUKU – The county Planning Department will hold a public meeting on a proposed new fee schedule at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 29.
The meeting will be held in the Planning Department Conference Room in the Kalana Pakui Building at 250 South High St. in Wailuku.
The purpose of the meeting will be to obtain public input and answer questions about a proposed approach to determining Planning Department permit application fees.
The proposed new fee schedule is the result of a study that assessed the actual costs associated with processing permits and other services provided by the department.
The county currently recovers 19 percent of the costs of department operations through permit application fees. The new fees would be phased-in over a five-year period and would move the department toward 70 percent cost recovery.
This issue has also been discussed by the Maui County Council’s Planning Committee. The input from this upcoming department meeting will be shared with the council in its continued deliberations of the proposed new fee schedule.
This study does not pertain to impact fees – such as those to fund transportation or other infrastructure improvements – nor does it pertain to fees assessed by any other county department.
The meeting will be hosted by Deputy Planning Director Michele McLean and current Division Planning Supervisor Jeffrey Dack.
Questions may be submitted to Dack at jeffrey.dack@co.maui.hi.us or 270-6275.
