Lahaina Library benefit to feature oceanside dancing
LAHAINA – Residents and visitors who would like to dance barefoot on a lush lawn will get their chance on Friday, June 22, at the benefit for Lahaina Public Library at the Royal Lahaina Resort.
“Savor the Sunset” will feature an appearance by JD on the Rocks, the popular band that has patrons dancing in the streets at the Pioneer Inn.
Between free wine tastings and sampling heavy pupus, hundreds of guests at the Rotary Club of Lahaina event will see firsthand how the band energizes a crowd.
A preview of the performance can be easily seen on an I-phone quality video by going on the Internet and searching for “Lahaina Rocks.”
In addition to beach party and dance tunes, the versatile band plays mellow love songs, country and such favorites as “Blue Moon,” “Margaritaville” and “Sweet Home Alabama.”
Event proceeds will go to the nonprofit Maui Friends of the Library, which is holding funds designated for the scheduled July facelift of Lahaina Public Library by the harbor.
Tickets prices – $50 in advance and $60 at the door – have been increased moderately to generate more funds for the library renovation project, which will add a new circulation desk, new bookshelves, painting throughout and other improvements, including new landscaping on the library’s front lawn.
Tickets can be purchased from Rotary Club members or by calling event Chair Liz May of 5A Rent-A-Space at 669-5200.
Volunteers are scheduled to begin packing up more than 35,000 books and other library materials in early July.
Some 15 contractors who are donating their services are expected to take about 30 days to complete the work, before books put in storage return.
Rotary’s 15-member library renovation committee has been meeting regularly to plan the unique project, secure necessary permits and coordinate construction.
