Celebration to pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The festival honors the life, legacy and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
A week-long Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Remembrance Celebration is set for Jan. 9-16.
The festival is dedicated to the life, legacy and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (Jan. 15, 1929 April 4, 1968), an American clergyman, activist and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement.
This year, leaders in the service community want to remember and honor Dr. King with a day, Jan. 16, that reflects his proposition that “everyone can be great because everyone can serve.” The day can bring out the greatness in people by bringing them together to make a difference in their communities.
The event includes Dr. King displays at Makawao, Wailuku and Kihei Public Library, as well as the Bailey House Museum, from Jan. 9-14.
On Monday, Jan. 9, Mayor Alan Arakawa will sign a proclamation for Maui’s celebration.
On Friday, Jan. 13, the Dr. King Peace Concert will be held at the Temple of Peace, 575 Haiku Road, at 7 p.m. Call 575-5220 for information.
On Saturday, Jan. 14, “Nara Boone Celebrates Dr. King” is slated at the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua from 6 to 9 p.m. Call 669-6200 for information.
On Sunday, Jan. 15, a 9 a.m. service at Queen Ka’ahumanu Congregational Church at 103 S. High St. in Wailuku will pay tribute to Dr. King. Call 242-1867 for information.
Additional services are slated at Grace Church at 55 Makaena Road in Pukalani at 10 a.m. (call 572-8384) and the Temple of Peace at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
Also on Sunday, Barnes & Noble in Lahaina Gateway Center will host a “Happy Birthday Martin Party” at noon.
On Monday, Jan. 16, Queen Ka’ahumanu Congregational Church at 8 a.m. will host an Inaugural Bell Ringing Ceremony for Dr. King.
Next, Mayor Arakawa will participate in opening ceremonies at the “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Stone of Hope Monument” near the County Building at 200 High St. in Wailuku.
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. March in commemoration of the March on Washington will then commence from the Stone of Hope to Wailuku Coffee Company, 26 N. Market St., for a Dr. King Tribute and Celebration. Speeches will be held until noon.
The festival will conclude with a celebration and entertainment at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center stage from 3 to 6 p.m.
