WAILUKU — The Maui County Council on Aug. 23 passed a resolution submitted by West Maui Councilwoman Elle Cochran to honor the Maui Preparatory Academy Middle School Science Olympiad team.

The resolution recognized the exceptional dedication and devotion of team members in preparing for the regional, state and national competitions involving 23 different scientific specialties and areas of study.

Special recognition was given to coaches Carrie DeMott, Chris Border and Krishna Narayan.

The 12-person team won all five of the regional science events and went on to capture the Hawaii state title for the second consecutive year over much larger schools like Punahou.

They competed in May at the national competition at the University of Wisconsin against teams larger than the entire enrollment of their preschool to 12th grade school.

Maui Prep is recognized by the Hawaii Community Foundation as a leader in the Schools of the Future initiative in promoting project-based learning and emphasis on science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Students from Maui Prep will give a presentation on robotics at the Schools of the Future Conference on Sept. 8.
