NAPILI — The Board of Trustees at Maui Preparatory Academy announced that the school has received a gift of 20.5 acres of land from Maui Land & Pineapple Co.

The company made the commitment to donate the land to the school in 2004, with the final deed transfer taking place this spring.

The parcel of land encompasses the school’s current campus in Napili as well as additional acreage for future use.

The Maui Prep community gathered on May 4 to honor and thank Maui Land & Pineapple Co. (ML&P) at a ceremony on the school’s campus.

Academy Board President Scott Shoemaker and Headmaster George Baker expressed the heartfelt feelings of the whole school community.

Shoemaker reviewed ML&P’s long history on Maui and commended them for their vision seven years ago in supporting the establishment of a new school for West Maui.

In his remarks, Baker said, “The story of Maui Prep would be very different if not for the extraordinary generosity of Maui Land & Pineapple Co. They have supported Maui Prep with the gift of this amazing campus and with significant financial contributions in the early years of our school. We as a school community will be forever grateful for this phenomenal support.”

A cast plaque will be displayed in perpetuity on the Maui Prep campus in recognition of ML&P’s contributions to the school.

Maui Preparatory Academy is an independent, college preparatory day school for students in preschool through grade 12 serving the West Side.

The school offers financial aid to qualifying families, with over 40 percent of its students receiving assistance.

Maui Prep is accredited by the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools (HAIS) and the Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC). Applications are still being accepted for the 2011-12 school year.
