‘Project Runway’ designers coming to Kaanapali

KAANAPALI — Since 2004, supermodel Heidi Klum and educator Tim Gunn have presented the best young and/or up-and-coming fashion designers in a reality show setting in “Project Runway.”
The designers compete for a cash prize, a spread in a major fashion magazine and the opportunity to have their line shown at the premiere American fashion event, Fashion Week in Bryant Park in New York City.
Each week, the number of contestants is winnowed down. As Klum says, “In fashion one day you’re in, and the next day you’re out!” Then, when the dreaded “Auf wiedersehn” is intoned from the blond, German impresario, the designer knows it’s time to pack their things and go.
At 7 p.m. on April 26, five of the most popular “Project Runway” designers from season eight — Mondo Guerra, Casanova, Andy South, Chris Collins and Michael Drummond — will be at the Hyatt Regency Maui to show their latest looks.
Mondo provided the most dramatic moment in the show’s history during the judging session of episode ten this past season. The designers were asked to create a print that meant something to them and to incorporate it into an original garment.
Mondo, who is known for his updated, mod style, was asked by Nina Garcia of Marie Claire Magazine almost flippantly, ” I wish I knew what the story was.” He replied that the plus signs on the design were about him being HIV positive for the last ten years — a fact he had never revealed to anyone, even his mother. It was one of the few times when everyone was crying, and it took Garcia’s breath away.
It’s going to be a party to remember, according to Maui Producer Charisse Nichole of VIP Style. “What a fantastic opportunity for VIP Style to have a fashion show with the contestants from ‘Project Runway’ just a few steps from the ocean. With the live music, deejays and dancing, this is definitely the party for anyone on Maui who loves fashion to get a serious fashion fix and have some serious fun.”
Bringing the “Project Runway” designers to Hawaii is the brainchild of Honolulu fashion diva and publisher of Hawaii RED Magazine, Malie Moran.
“Hawaii RED Magazine is excited to work with five talented designers from ‘Project Runway,’ including Hawaii’s Andy South. These designers are inspiring others with their energy, creativity and unique sense of style.”
Maui models, hair and make-up artists will have the opportunity of a lifetime to work with these top designers, who have been the object of millions’ affections. Tickets are $35 for VIP access and $25 general admission. They are available at www.ProjectRunwayMaui.eventbrite.com and, if any are remaining, at the door.
