Officials to discuss dengue fever prevention

By Staff | Apr 18, 2011

HAIKU — Maui County Councilman Mike White has scheduled a public outreach meeting in Haiku tonight to help prevent the spread of dengue fever.

Open to the public, the meeting will be held at Haiku Community Center at 6 p.m. today, Monday, April 18.

The Office of the Mayor and state Department of Health’s Maui District Health Office are cosponsoring the informational meeting.

District Health Officer Lorrin Pang will lead a presentation on the mosquito-borne disease and answer questions.

Mayor Alan Arakawa is expected to attend and speak.

“The threat of dengue fever is something we need to take seriously, and we may be intervening very early when we can have the greatest impact,” Councilman White noted.

“Simple measures — removing debris that mosquitos can breed in and dumping containers of stagnant water — can have a big impact on reducing our risk for dengue fever, so it’s important that the public has access to this information now.”
