Bikers to help needy keiki through 2010 Maui Toy Run

By Staff | Dec 16, 2010

Maui Toy Run participants will ride from Kahului to Lahaina at 11 a.m. The Toys for Tots Benefit Party is set for noon to 6 p.m. at Lulu’s Lahaina Surf Club & Grill at Lahaina Cannery Mall.

LAHAINA — Street Bikers United Hawaii, Maui Chapter members will ride from Kahului to Lahaina and collect gifts for Toys for Tots during the 2010 Maui Toy Run on Sunday, Dec. 19.

“This is Maui’s largest biking event of the year. Each year, we have 400-600 bikers come out to show their support for Toys for Tots. There’s just something special about a biker with a large stuffed bear on his bike for a keiki,” said Marlene Debnam, Maui Chapter president.

“Bikers have a lot of heart and love to give to our keiki. We love bringing the joy of Christmas to Maui County’s less fortunate children.”

The event starts at 9 a.m. in the Maui Marketplace parking lot in front of Borders Books and Sports Authority.

Motorcyclists and their families and friends will collect unwrapped toys for Toys for Tots, the club will present a group of children with gifts and the keiki will meet Santa and his helpers.

At 11 a.m., Street Bikers United Hawaii members will depart for Lahaina. The riders will parade down Front Street and head to Lahaina Cannery Mall in front of Lulu’s Lahaina Surf Club & Grill.

“We have motorcyclists from many of the clubs here on Maui, as well as plenty of independent riders, visitors and some riders from other islands join us each year. Oahu just had their event on Dec. 5 with over 4,000 bikes,” Debnam explained.

Riders will give toys to a group of children before going into LuLu’s for their Toys for Tots Benefit Party from noon to 6 p.m.

Admission is $20, which includes lunch, raffle ticket and entertainment. There will be $10 tickets at the door for entry without lunch, which include a raffle number, one drink ticket and entertainment.

The grand prize drawing will be held about 3:20 p.m. The winner of the Alii’s of Hawaii Motorcycle Club’s first annual Bike Raffle will be announced at 3:30 p.m. They are raffling off a 1981 Harley Davidson Shovel Head SG.

The benefit’s entertainment lineup starts at 2:30 p.m. with No Remorse playing until 3:15 p.m., followed by Darrell Mansfield from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. and The Throwdowns from 5 to 6 p.m.

“Please help us by donating an unwrapped toy or making a cash donation. All proceeds go directly for the benefit of the keiki,” Debnam said.

U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Brandon Benz-Marrs is the driving force on Maui for Toys for Tots.
