LAHAINA — Oak Park Chimney Corporation is currently installing 17 carbon steel tension bands around the Pioneer Mill Smokestack to stabilize it.
Workers are also patching and filling cracks in preparation for the painting of the smokestack.
The top 14-foot section of the smokestack was taken off during the demolition of the mill buildings.
A new 14-foot section is being fabricated in Chicago and will be shipped to Maui soon, reported Theo Morrison of Lahaina Restoration Foundation (LRF).
The top, which includes a decorative crown, is being fabricated from steel but will be painted to match the rest of the smokestack,

“After that, we will begin the installation of our brick walkway and interpretive area,” Morrison noted.
LRF is funding this $600,000 project with the sale of commemorative bricks. To date, brick sales have topped $250,000, and sales will continue until the total amount is raised. Call 661-3262 or visit www.lahainarestoration.org to purchase a brick.
