Banquet to honor hoops teams

By Staff | Mar 11, 2010

LAHAINA — The West Side community has united to honor the Lahainaluna High School basketball program with a luau banquet on Tuesday, March 23, at the Lahaina Civic Center Social Hall. The festivities will begin at 6 p.m. with a luau-style dinner.

Lahainaluna basketball experienced unprecedented success with Maui Interscholastic League championships for the varsity girls, varsity boys, junior varsity girls and junior varsity boys.

It was the sixth straight MIL title for the Lady Lunas, who then went on to capture the state championship in Honolulu.

The varsity boys also won the MIL title to advance to the state tournament.

Spearheaded and underwritten by the Friends of Lahainaluna Football Inc., the celebration for the hoopsters is being organized by parents of the players to congratulate the athletes and coaches for all of the hard work that went into bringing the high level of success.

The mission at Friends of Lahainaluna Football Inc. is to foster local and state amateur athletics at the high school level and below. While their main focus is the Lunas football program, they take the opportunity to support other sports programs when and where they can.

Under the organization’s nonprofit, 501 (c)3 umbrella, they are asking for contributions for the celebration banquet. Donations are tax-deductible, but they advise to always consult with your tax advisor.

Donations may be sent to Friends of Lahainaluna Football Inc., Attn. Basketball Celebration, P.O. Box 10486, Lahaina, HI 96761. Call Lanny Tihada at (808) 250-6279 with any questions regarding donations.

The Steering Committee will pre-sell tickets for the banquet for $15 per adult and $7 for children age 6-10; keiki five and under are free. Cost for parents will be $10 per person; these tickets must be picked up by March 12. Contact Lana Vierra at 281-1238 for further information regarding tickets.

Commemorative T-shirts for the girls and boys teams are being produced and may be pre-ordered by contacting Laurie Viela at 661-6641 or 269-8996. To guarantee your T-shirt order, make payment of $15 per shirt no later than March 15.

The Lunas coaches have requested that there be no lei or gift-giving to any players. The thought and kindness of the community is appreciated, but in consideration of all the players, please refrain from bringing gifts.

The coaches also ask that all in attendance wear red. Imua, Lahainaluna!
