Concert to help cover youngster’s medical expenses

Trina Lahela Akima seeks donations for a benefit concert for Kaniala Pasamonte on Jan. 16.
LAHAINA — On Saturday, Jan. 16, Lahainaluna High School senior Trina Lahela Akima plans to hold a benefit concert for Kaniala Pasamonte.
All proceeds from "He Lei Poina ‘Ole Ke Keiki" from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas’ North Lawn will go directly to Kaniala’s family to help pay for his medical expenses.
Four-year-old Kaniala has endured three surgeries on Oahu.
"He was diagnosed with Diaphragmatic Hernia. When his condition gets to its worst, Kaniala tends to languish. He cannot eat, drink or sleep," explained Akima, who is coordinating the concert as her senior project.
"He’s had this illness since he was about three months, so he is already used to the pain. At times this could be scary, because he could be playing, yet he could be in a lot of pain.
"As of today, Kaniala is doing great. He is back here on Maui under careful watch by his loving and affable family."
Every two months, Kaniala goes in for x-ray tests, "and the x-rays alone cost a lot," Akima noted.
"So I hope to raise as much money as Kaniala and his family needs for his medical expenses."
The benefit will feature a silent auction, games, live entertainment, crafts and food.
Akima seeks volunteer vendors, entertainers and food booths willing to donate their time.
"Because this is my senior project and a benefit concert, I don’t have much money to give up, which is why I am asking for copious donations," Akima explained.
