Maui artist Darren Ho stands aside his first place sculpture at Lahaina Cannery Mall’s 2008 International Ice Sculpting event.

LAHAINA — Maui’s popular International Ice Sculpting Exhibition and Competition returns to Lahaina Cannery Mall this weekend, Nov. 14-15.

The two-day event features artists from Japan and across Hawaii cranking up their chain saws and turning ice into art.

The ice chips will fly from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, as visiting artists from Japan demonstrate their skills in a freestyle ice-carving exhibition.

Pride and prizes are on the line Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., as artists return to carve fresh blocks of ice in head-to-head competition.

Sunday’s festivities will include a special performance from Grammy Award-winning slack key master George Kahumoku Jr. and some of his ukulele and guitar students in support of his new release, “Kani Wai,” at 11:15 a.m.

The art will be on display throughout the weekend, and the event is free.
