Highway widening project under way
LAHAINA — A state project to widen Honoapiilani Highway from Lahainaluna Road south to Aholo Street began Monday.
The state Department of Transportation estimates that the project will be completed in one year.
Construction is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays.
“It’s possible this could change to seven days a week, depending on how the job progresses,” noted Norma Barton of Lahaina Bypass Now in an e-mail to members Friday.
“Goodfellow Brothers Inc. (GBI), the firm in charge of construction, will do their best to alleviate any potential traffic delays while working on this project; nevertheless, please consider leaving a bit early when driving around town, to make allowances for any possible delays.”
In its contract, GBI must keep one lane open in each direction.
“They will not be allowed to just use one lane and a flagger to alternate traffic flow,” Barton wrote.
“This company has an excellent reputation for minimizing disruption on jobs that are in high traffic areas.”
DOT and the contractor plan to use electronic reader boards to update the public on the project. Pay attention to these electronic road signs for important changes and updates.
