Through her work at Kaanapali Beach Hotel, Lori Sablas promotes riding the bus among employees and guests.

LAHAINA — Lahaina Bypass Now announced that Lori Sablas won its Way-To-Go award for September 2009.

Way-To-Go awards are given out to members of the community that promote, utilize or in some fashion advocate for using alternative modes of transportation, such as taking the bus, riding a bicycle or walking instead of driving.

Since 1989, Sablas has held the position of director of Po‘okela at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel. Responsibilities include administering the hotel’s award-winning Hawaiian culture program and directing Guest Services, the Bell Department, ‘Ohana Fun Center and ‘Ohana Welcome Breakfast.

A Kihei resident, Sablas was honored for riding the bus to and from work on a regular basis.

She said she “wanted to set an example that even a very busy person like me could ride the bus. I prefer the bus over the car, because I can use the time to catch up on my reading.”

“It’s one more car off the road, saves money and wear and tear on my car, (I) get to meet new people, (and it) forces me to exercise regularly, as I need to walk for about ten minutes to my bus stop,” Sablas said, noting the benefits of riding the bus.

Sablas received a $20 gift certificate from Mala Ocean Tavern for winning the award, donated by owner Mark Ellman.

Nominations for the Way-to-Go award series, sponsored by Maui Tacos, Penne Pasta and Mala Ocean Tavern, may be sent to info@lahainabypassnow.com.
