Lianne Coon won the August Malama Lahaina Employee Award for her knowledge on the Pioneer Mill Smokestack.

LAHAINA — Lianne Coon of Trilogy Excursions won the August Malama Lahaina Employee Award for answering questions about the Pioneer Mill Company Smokestack.

The monthly contest seeks to increase Lahaina employee’s knowledge about the historical and cultural legacy of Lahaina, so they can share this information with their customers.

For her resourcefulness, Coon received a $20 gift certificate from Mala Ocean Tavern.

A major landmark in Lahaina, the smokestack will undergo a complete restoration soon.

Lahaina Restoration Foundation will restore the top of the smokestack — which was removed several years ago for safety reasons — and refurbish the entire structure. The foundation will also create a six-foot-wide circular brick path around the base.

To help offset restoration costs, installation of interpretive plaques and landscape features, LRF has started a “Buy A Brick” campaign.

Bricks are available for purchase and can be engraved with a name, the name of a loved one or a company name or logo.

“Buy a Brick” forms are available at the MauiGrown Coffee Company Store on Lahainaluna Road or online at www.lahainarestoration.org.

The brick walkway will be a permanent legacy of the community’s commitment to preserve Lahaina’s history.
