Artist joins campaign to rescue Fourth of July fireworks

LAHAINA — A Maui artist who specializes in creating custom paintings for homes has created a special painting called “Celebration Integration” to commemorate what she hopes will be Lahaina’s annual July 4 fireworks display.

Anita Marci, inspired by a famous Jasper Johns painting titled “Three flags” that she viewed during a recent visit to the Whitney Museum in New York, put her brushes to canvas to encourage business people and others to contribute funding so that the event can move forward.

The Maui Chamber of Commerce has stepped up to sponsor the celebration if it can raise an additional minimum of $6,000 to pay for the fireworks and associated costs, including staffing extra police officers. The art will be used in a poster to promote the event.

Marci combined the Hawaii and U.S. flags “in order to enhance the feeling of Hawaii’s unity and connection to the United States of America.”
