Free Maui Strong events for youth set

By Staff | Oct 5, 2023

Place-based science is a specialty of Learning Endeavors events, teaching participating youth about Maui’s unique natural environments and endemic species.

KIHEI — Families impacted by the Aug. 8 fires can apply for scholarships to any event currently offered by Learning Endeavors, including a Three-Day Fall Break Coastal Camp in Kīhei, Saturday Adventures at various outdoor sites, After School Classes, Saturday Workshops, and Puppet Shows.

All events offer hands-on, innovative learning experiences. The Fall Break Coastal Camp is set for Oct. 11-13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Kīhei. The theme is “BioBlitz,” and keiki will have fun planting, exploring wildlife, and building models of food webs found only in Hawaiʻi.

The upcoming Saturday Adventures take place in wetlands, tidepools, streamside forests and more. These are geared for seven- to 14-year-olds and will be offered throughout the island, including in West Maui.

The 3D Design & Print Workshop is on Oct. 21 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in Kīhei. Participants will use 3D doodle pens and a 3D printer for STEM fun.

The next series of After School Classes starts Oct. 30. Classes like Gaming & Coding Club, Mad Scientist Lab, and Digital Art are offered in Kīhei. Space is limited to 14 participants in most events; to learn more, visit www.learningendeavors.org/foryouth.

“This grant allows us to cover the cost of activities for families who have been directly impacted by the fires,” said Executive Director Diana Papini Warren, “along with those families feeling the economic repercussions impacting the wider island. We encourage anyone in need to apply for assistance.”

Warren said, “We are excited to be partnering with the Hawaii Tech Academy West Maui Campus to offer ʻĀina-Based Science Lessons each week. We have also offered Lokelani Intermediate School, where over 115 Lahaina Intermediate students relocated temporarily these past weeks, with Lunchtime Science Activities every Tuesday and Thursday. We look forward to evolving and expanding our support for families and keiki on this long road ahead for our Maui Community.”
