Jazz all-stars to perform two concerts

Jazz fans can see Grammy Award-winning trumpeter and composer Charlie Porter in Kihei on April 26.
In celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month, Jazz Maui will present Sunset Jazz featuring bassist Doug White, saxophonist John Zangrando, keyboardist Mark Johnstone and drummer Paul Marchetti on Sunday, April 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Maui Ku’ia Estate Chocolate Factory at 78 Ulupono St. in Lahaina.

First established in 2001 by the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, Jazz Appreciation Month is held every April in recognition of the significant contribution that jazz music has made to society.
Sunset Jazz offers great live jazz music by visiting and local professional jazz musicians and chocolate/beverage pairings every Sunday in the upstairs open-air pavilion at the Chocolate Bar.
Different artists perform each week, and the music is always top-notch. Sunset Jazz attendees must be 21 years or older and have a valid photo ID. Sunset Jazz concert ticket sales benefit Jazz Maui’s music education programs.
In related news, Jazz Maui and ProArts Playhouse will present Grammy Award-winning trumpeter and composer Charlie Porter on Wednesday, April 26, at the ProArts Playhouse at 1280 South Kihei Road at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at www.ProArtsMaui.org.
Described by Chicago Jazz Magazine as “… one of the most brilliant and imaginative contemporary composers of mainsteam jazz… stimulating and emotive original music with a rare blend of sophistication and organic spontaneity,” Porter’s music has also been described as “fluid, expressive, and magnificent” by DownBeat Magazine.
Porter holds a degree from The Juilliard School, where he studied under the tutelage of famed trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis. Porter also holds a degree from the Manhattan School of Music in jazz and classical performance.
He was a Fulbright Scholar at the Paris Conservatory. Among many awards to his credit, Charlie was the first trumpeter to win first place in both the classical and jazz divisions of the National Trumpet Competition. As a composer, he has been commissioned by Chamber Music America and the Doris Duke Foundation
Charlie has toured the world as a side-man and bandleader in jazz and also as a classical soloist and chamber musician, performing and recording with many notable musicians and groups over the last 20 years, ranging from jazz to classical artists as well as world-music greats.
Currently, he is an adjunct professor of trumpet at New York University.
Joining Charlie on Wednesday, April 26, are bassist Marcus Johnson, pianist Jeff Hellmer, drummer Duke Gadd and saxophonist John Zangrando.
