Maui Music Series continues Friday with Jazz Appreciation Concert

Accomplished bassist and vocalist Katie Thiroux is coordinating the “Jazz in the Schools” workshops being held at King Kekaulike High School, Maui Preparatory Academy, Kamehameha Schools and Seabury Hall.
This month, Jazz Maui presents The 2022 Maui Music Series “Tribute to Jazz Appreciation Month,” featuring distinguished jazz professionals participating in an exciting schedule of themed concerts covering Latin Jazz, Jazz Fusion, Smooth Jazz and Straight Ahead Jazz.

The Jazz Appreciation Concert featuring Latin Jazz by Lat. 21° N and Jazz Fusion by Cosmic Groove, with a special tribute to Roscoe Wright, is set for Friday, April 22.
Pianist and vocalist Sal Godinez leads Lat. 21° N accompanied by fellow Mauians Danny B (bass), Estaire Godinez (percussion) and John Zangrando (woodwinds) in demonstrating the Latin Jazz genre.
Sal has played with some of Hawaii’s most popular entertainers, including Benoit Jazz Works, Amy Hanaialii Gilliom, Willie K and Melveen Leed, and has toured across the Mainland United States playing with different bands.
Originally from California, he has been a professional musician since the age of 15. His first interest was classical music, but in college, his horizons broadened to jazz, funk, salsa, Brazilian and indigenous genres.
Prem Brosio and Cosmic Groove perform in the Jazz Fusion style. Prem is a professional guitarist and music educator from Maui. He studied jazz guitar in Switzerland and earned a Bachelor of Education in Music from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Currently, he is the band director at Kamehameha Middle School.
Cosmic Grove features Paul Marchetti on drums, John Zangrando on woodwinds, John Toda on bass and Mark Johnstone on piano.
“Roscoe Wright was a respected and admired Maui jazz drummer who recently passed away,” said Bryant Neal, executive director of Jazz Maui.
“Many of the participants in the 2022 Maui Music Series performed with Roscoe and wanted to pay tribute to him during Jazz Appreciation Month.”
Pre-show with music by Tanama Calibri and Friends begins at 5:30 p.m. at The Altitude Deck at 650 Lipoa Parkway in Kihei, an open-air rooftop venue with spectacular sunset and panoramic views. Seating is limited. Tickets are $20 and are available at www.jazzmaui.org.
Food by The Empanada Lady Restaurant, including chicken, beef or vegan empanadas and mini Cuban sandwiches, will be available for purchase.
Audience members can bring their own beverage (beer and wine only) for a $10 corkage fee.
