WAILUKU — “She Kills Monsters,” a Dungeons & Dragons/swordfighting fantasy with a heart, will come to life at the Historic Iao Theater with Napili resident Nico Low as Vera.

Directed by David Negaard, performances are slated for April 16, 17, 22, 23, 24, 29 and 30, and May 1.

Written by Qui Nguyen, co-writer of Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon,” “She Kills Monsters” tells the story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly.

When Agnes finds Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, she finds herself catapulted into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was her sister’s refuge.

In this high-octane dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres and 1990s pop culture, acclaimed playwright Nguyen offers a heart-pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all.

Nguyen’s comedic yet heartwarming coming of age story deals with the tough, but very real and relatable, topics of family, love, loss, grief and LGBTQ+ identity. The production contains some adult content and language.

“She Kills Monsters” was honored with the 2013 American Alliance for Theater and Education Distinguished Play Award, 2012 GLAAD Media Award nomination, and 2012 ITBA Patrick Lee Award.

“It will slash and shapeshift its way into your heart,” wrote a critic with The New York Times.

Ticket prices are $25-$45 for general admission and $15-$35 for students.

“Whole Row Buy-Out” and kama’aina discounts are available. For tickets or more information, go to www.mauionstage.com.
