Come celebrate The Slack Key Show’s 18th Anniversary

By Staff | Oct 15, 2021

Originally called the Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Concert Series, the show was founded by George Kahumoku and his two close friends, Paul Konwieser and Wayne Wong.

NAPILI — George & Nancy Kahumoku are pleased to announce the 18th Anniversary of The Slack Key Show – Masters of Hawaiian Music on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 6:30 p.m.

The special guest star will be the legendary Led Kaapana, Grand Master of Slack Key, who has been performing as a featured guest artist since the show’s inception in 2003. Both George and Led were recording and touring for George Winston’s Dancing Cat Records since the late 1990s, and so the concept for creating a concert venue in Hawaii for these distinguished guitarists was born.

Originally called the Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Concert Series, the show was founded by George and his two close friends, Paul Konwieser and Wayne Wong. Shows were performed at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua.

The Grammy Awards then opened a Hawaiian music category, which was an excellent opportunity to promote Hawaiian artists’ recordings. Their annual collections were engineering by George’s close friend, Daniel Ho, and these CDs proceeded to win Best Hawaiian Music Album for four of the next five consecutive years.

When the Ritz-Carlton closed for renovations, General Manager Gregg Nelson generously invited George to bring the series to the Napili Kai Beach Resort, where it has remained.

The show’s name transitioned to The Slack Key Show, adding Masters of Hawaiian Music to better describe the shows when ukulele, steel guitar and vocalists outside of the slack key genre were added as featured guest artists.
