Professional artists to give educational talks at free art exhibit on Feb. 22-23

By Staff | Feb 13, 2020

LAHAINA – On Saturday, Feb. 22, and Sunday, Feb. 23, the 2020 Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational Art Show will exhibit more than 125 original oils, acrylics, pastels and watercolors of Maui, including 16 awards, at the Royal Lahaina Resort Ballroom.

The art show opens at 10 a.m. and concludes with a free community forum each day from 3 to 4 p.m.

Saturday, a panel of four professional plein air artists will discuss their backgrounds and motivations. They handle hard questions, like making the decision whether to paint what you love or paint what sells.

Last year, Terry Miura, a former illustrator for Sports Illustrated, counseled artists, “Don’t worry about style; improve your foundation skills and this will improve your paintings. Style comes by itself.”

This inspiring discussion is for students, art enthusiasts and collectors.

Sunday, Maui Arts League hosts a commentary on Expressionism by MAMo master artist Al Lagunero, a Maui expressionist and Hawaiian cultural practitioner.

He will reflect on the 2020 Honor Hawaii/Honor Maui body of work and point out expressions of our treasured island that come through the paintings.

Al has mentored many young artists in Hawaii and teaches youth how to create public murals using Hawaiian imagery and motifs that recount ancient stories preserved in Hawaiian mele (chants) passed down for a thousand years. Both these forums are free and open to the public.

Serious students can still get in on a personalized oil painting workshop on Feb. 24-26. Tuition is $450 plus tax, and students provide their own materials. Sought-after international art instructor and professional plein air artist Jane Hunt will take students to their next level of expertise with elements of classical design and the nuances of light. This advanced workshop for students, amateur artists or professionals represents a rare opportunity to learn new techniques and receive meaningful critique that builds mastery.
