Jazz Maui to pay tribute to Emil Richards
KIHEI – Jazz Maui will present “A Musical Tribute to Emil Richards” on Saturday, Jan. 11, at The Altitude Deck, 650 Lipoa Parkway, rooftop at Kihei Charter School from 6 to 9 p.m.
Tickets are $15 for this limited seating event and may be purchased online at Jazzmaui.org. Proceeds benefit Jazz Maui’s music education programs in which Richards participated, teaching workshops and youth clinics.
Richards (Sept. 2, 1932 – Dec. 14, 2019) was an American vibraphonist and percussionist who was recorded on more than 1,350 film scores and performed and recorded with more than 650 artists. His work can be heard on famous television show themes, such as the finger snaps on “The Addams Family,” bongos on “Mission Impossible,” vibes on “The Flintstones” and xylophone on the opening tune of “The Simpsons.”
He worked with a wide variety of musical stars, such as Judy Garland, Nat King Cole, Stan Kenton, Ella Fitzgerald, The Beach Boys, George Harrison, Frank Zappa, Glen Campbell, Luciano Pavarotti and many more.
Richards was a part-time Maui resident and a regular at Blackie’s Bar in Lahaina from 1982 to 1995.
“A Musical Tribute to Emil Richards,” hosted by Kathy Collins, will feature a memorial tribute led by Sara Gadarian of Lahaina, former proprietor of Blackie’s Bar.
The event showcases members of the original “Jazz at Blackie’s” band who played with Richards, including: Paul Marchetti, drums; Sal Godinez, keyboards and vocals; John Zangrando, saxophone; Danny M, bass; Estaire Godinez, vocals and Latin percussion; Gene Argel, keyboards; and Marcus Johnson, bass.
Also performing at the tribute are members of the Jazz Maui Players: percussionist Peter Dela Croce, Jazz guitarist Prem Brosio, bassist Danny M, trumpeter Jake Thomas, Saxophonist Joie Yasha, clarinetist Michael Guzalak and vocalists Tanama Calibri and Shea Derrick.
