Virtuoso guitarists to perform concerts around Maui
Virtuoso guitarist Benjamin Verdery will hold his 20th classical guitar master class on Maui on July 1-10, with concerts and classes taking place throughout the week at various locations on the island.
Joining Verdery this year will be acclaimed guitarists Mark Eden and Christopher Stell of the Eden Stell Guitar Duo, and Hawaiian guitarist and ukulele player Ian O’Sullivan.
A free public concert will be held on Friday, July 5, at noon at the University of Hawaii Maui College Science Building lecture theatre.
O’Sullivan and Verdery, along with student guitarists Nicholas Padmanabhan, Ahhyun Noh, Reade Park and Marvin Ren, will perform a free concert for the community. The program will include music by Bach, Villa-Lobos, Dyens and others.
A free public concert is set for Sunday, July 7, at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church at 8992 Kula Highway in Kula.
This concert will feature performers from the class. John Olson and Thomas Donahue will perform music for guitar and organ by Bach and Rodrigo, and guitarists Padmanabhan, Noh and Ren will perform solo guitar music by Dowland, Sakamoto, Bach, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Rodrigo, Schubert and Morel.
Free public student concerts are slated for Monday, July 8, at 7 p.m. at Keawala’i Congregational Church at 5300 Makena Road in Makena, and Tuesday, July 9, at 7 p.m. at Lahaina Jodo Mission at 12 Ala Moana St. in Lahaina.
Class participants will perform two free concerts, with individual performances and pieces for guitar orchestra conducted by Verdery, O’Sullivan, Eden and Stell.
Among the works will be music for guitar and koto, guitar and violin, guitar and organ, guitar and voice; and solo guitar.
Class sessions will be held July 2-10.
