Ed Gerhard, Anjelah Johnson coming to the MACC
KAHULUI – Grammy Award-winning guitarist Ed Gerhard will perform on Thursday, Jan. 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.
Gerhard’s music has touched audiences all over the world.
Along with players like Ben Harper and David Lindley, Gerhard’s unique approach to the Weissenborn – an acoustic Hawaiian lap slide guitar – is playing a significant role in reinvigorating interest in this somewhat esoteric but beautiful instrument.
His style of Weissenborn playing is unique in that he composes and arranges music for the instrument with beautiful melodies, complex chords and moving bass lines – unusual for an instrument that normally serves an accompaniment role.
Scott Alarik of the Boston Globe wrote, “Gerhard does not write instrumentals. He writes songs only a guitar can sing.”
Tickets are $42 or $56; call 242-SHOW or visit www.MauiArts.org.
Next, Anjelah Johnson’s More of Me Tour is coming to the MACC on Friday, Jan. 18, at 7:30 p.m.
Anjelah Johnson-Reyes was born and raised in San Jose, California, and is of Mexican and Native American descent.
She was a professional cheerleader, and after performing for the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII, she decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue her dream of acting.
She became an Internet sensation with her viral video, “Nail Salon.” That same year she joined the cast of “MADtv” as a series regular, which spawned another Internet sensation, “Bon Qui Qui.”
This original character, a disgruntled fast food employee with no filter, has been viewed and replicated by over 75 million people worldwide.
After recording and releasing three songs and two music videos as Bon Qui Qui, she signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records to release a full album titled “Gold Plated Dreams.”
Bon Qui Qui teamed up with Benefit Cosmetics for her third music video, “This Is How We Do It.” After the success of her debut album, Bon Qui Qui released a Christmas EP titled “Merry Hoodmas.”
Johnson has starred in numerous films, including “Mom’s Night Out,” which not only features Anjelah but also her husband, musician Manwell Reyes of the musical duo Panda$.
