Bring your own kites — big or small, traditional or modern — and see them in action at the festival.

KAHULUI – The public is invited to the third annual Kite Festival hosted by the Japanese Cultural Society of Maui on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Keopuolani Park Field #8, located right below the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.

This event is free. Kite kits to decorate with colored markers will be available for a $5 donation to JCSM. Prizes will be given to the best decorated kites and best kite fliers at 12 noon.

Water will be provided. Attendees may also bring their own materials, chairs and snacks.

“Kites are very complex objects; building one requires skill, craftsmanship and even style,” said Deron Furukawa, president of JCSM. “If you have a kite just stored somewhere in your home, come and see it up in the air at the Kite Festival, and it will surely bring joy to you and to many.”

The mission of the Japanese Cultural Society of Maui is to perpetuate Japanese culture in the community. Kite flying in Japan dates back in the 16th century as a custom to pray for good health and a bright future.
