LAHAINA – Lahaina Cannery Mall held the second annual SING IT! Youth Singing Competition on Saturday, June 23.

Ten exceptionally talented Maui teens put on an entertaining show as they competed to win cash prizes totaling $1,800.

Popular KAOI Radio Deejay Cindy Paulos was the emcee, and the judges were KAOI’s Jack Gist and Maui musicians Mitch Kepa and Gina Martinelli.

Fourteen-year-old Tasha Aco’s powerful performance of Adele’s “When We Were Young” brought her the highest point total of the day, and she was awarded the $1,000 first place prize.

The second place prize of $500 went to Leimana Purdy, 14, who sang a beautiful Hawaiian song called “Nani Nani Yenuse” by Napalapalai.

Placing third, and winning $300, was 15-year-old Jena Makai for her performance of “Burn” from the musical “Hamilton.”

Lahaina Cannery Mall presents the annual competition in support of youth and the arts on Maui.

Many of the SING IT! contestants participate in performing arts classes and theater groups such as Maui Academy of Performing Arts.

Paulos said, “The level of talent displayed by the young performers was outstanding, and the audience experienced ‘chicken skin’ song after song.”

Lahaina Cannery Mall also announced that its shops and Safeway are open during construction.
