LAHAINA – There’s an exciting new musical group performing at venues around Maui, and they are endearing the hearts of their audiences with amazing and fearless talent. Na Haumana is an all-star team of young musicians from three different elementary schools in Lahaina.

They meet after school and on Saturdays for rehearsal at Maui Music Mission, where they are trained on multiple instruments, beginning with ukulele and piano. Members of this group find their parts in the dynamics. They add guitar, percussion and violin to their arrangements. Vocal exercise, music theory and performance etiquette are all part of the package as well.

The show includes hits like “Price Tag,” “Roar,” and “I’m Yours,” local favorites like “Island Style,” “White Sandy Beach” and “Cool Down,” as well as traditional Hawaiian songs like “Hawaii Pono’i.”

Advanced students from Reuben Pali’s music club have been meeting for a free practice session every week for the past 18 months.

“This gives them the chance to discover new techniques and challenge themselves beyond the borders of our regular programs,” he said.

This May, the group is traveling to California to compete at the Heritage Music Festival in a nationally accredited program. They will earn high school credit while experiencing the excitement of opening doors to a wide world of music.

Maui Music Mission holds the vision of serving this community with high-quality, and low-cost, music education for keiki ages 6-12.

This vision was born when Pali saw that keiki were not receiving the tradition of music.

“Let’s not become so busy that we forget the importance of this gift. Music is for everyone, and all keiki need access to it from an early age,” he commented.

Members of the group have been fundraising every week since October. They have done online campaigns, plate lunches, holiday crafts, gift-wrapping and a car wash. Each time they do a project together, the team is getting tighter and more committed to their goal.
