By Staff | Jan 4, 2018

George Kahumoku Jr. will be performing many of these songs at his CD release party on Jan. 3 at the Wednesday night Slack Key Show at the Napili Kai Beach Resort. The show is entering its 15th year of weekly shows.

NAPILI – George Kahumoku Jr., host of his weekly Slack Key Show Masters of Hawaiian Music at Napili Kai Beach Resort, recently released his newest CD, “Tutu’s Favorite Songs Melodies of Old Hawaii.”

These songs are among his great-grandmother Tutu Lottie Keko’o Ha’ae Kahumoku’s favorites. George spent many hours as a youth listening to her sing and play ukulele after long days of picking coffee.

Family and friends would gather on the weekends or on special occasions, when they would all share food and kanikapila late into the night.

George sings these vintage songs while playing his distinctive 12-string slack key style of guitar.

The new release has been submitted to the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts (HARA) for the upcoming Na Hoku Hanohano Awards in 2018.

“I hope you enjoy Tutu’s Favorite Songs,” stated George. “My Tutu often sang these old Hawaiian songs, and now, whenever I play them, they bring back fond memories of my youth. This collection is gentle and soothing and played in the old slack key guitar style.”

Among the 14 songs are “Kamalani O Keaukaha” (instrumental); “Panini Pua Kea;” “Punalu’u” (“This was my dad’s favorite song, and Tutu would request that he sing it whenever we would visit her,” George said); “Manu O’O;” “Noe Noe Ua Kea O Hana;” “Green Rose Hula;” “Hilo Hanakahi (instrumental);” and “He Aloha No ‘O Honolulu.”

George has won four Grammy Awards for compilation CDs produced from these outstanding live show performances. For ticket information, call 669-3858 or go to www.SlackKeyShow.com.

“Tutu’s Favorite Songs Melodies of Old Hawaii” was funded by George’s fans and supporters through a Kickstarter campaign. It is now available online at Kahumoku.com along with a wide selection of George’s other CDs. Other locations to purchase are Lahaina Music and Request Records.
