Carleton’s light-filled plein air oil paintings capture Maui’s charm with a nostalgic touch; his “Take Home Maui” is pictured.

LAHAINA – Village Galleries at 120 Dickenson St. in Lahaina will feature a 2018 exhibition of recent work by Carleton this month.

The Gala Artist’s Reception will be held Friday, Jan. 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. Opening night festivities include refreshments and live music. For information, call 661-4402 or visit villagegalleriesmaui.com.

Carleton finds Maui’s landscape perfect for his color-filled plein air oil paintings. Always pushing his talents to better express his fascination with light and shadows, Carleton’s paintings are uplifting and optimistic.

Carleton is often an award-winning participant in the annual Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational and a three-time winner of the Lahaina Poster Contest.

In 2012, he was the first recipient of a privately funded Creativity Grant. Carleton has participated in a number of juried and invitational exhibitions on Maui, including the highly respected Schaefer Portrait Challenge and Art Maui.

Carleton’s art is included in numerous private collections, locally and internationally.

“I’m drawn to subjects in Lahaina that are undeveloped, showing Maui’s natural drama, and subjects showing our unique island lifestyle,” Carleton explained.

In related news, George Allan will offer a painting demonstration at Village Galleries at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua on Thursday, Jan. 10, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call 669-1800 for more information.
