KAHULUI – “If it weren’t for Mother’s Day, there might be a lot of motherless orchids on the island,” Jan Porter, Maui Orchid Society president, lamented, tongue-in-cheek.

“Luckily,” the Kihei resident added, “the Maui Orchid Society is here to solve that problem with a smashing Mother’s Day Show and Exhibit staged at the Maui Mall on May 5, 6 and 7, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“We’ll have plenty to chose from. There’s sure to be one you can take home to Mom to love,” Porter commented.

Sandi Amaral has organized the annual event the past four years and has had plenty of experience.

“Every year, it never ceases to amaze me,” Amaral exclaimed. “There are show-stopping, award-winning orchids on display, and the commercial growers’ selection of exotics for sale is spectacular.”

Prices range from $7 to $25.

American Orchid Society-certified officials will judge the exhibit, and ribbons will be awarded.

“Celebrating its 75th year, the Maui Orchid Society is a multifaceted, multitalented group of folks sharing not only their love of orchids, but also their passions and creative talents,” Porter observed.

The public is invited to observe the demonstrations free of charge.

On Thursday, May 5, Bert Akitake, former MOS president, will be sharing his knowledge about “Vanilla Orchids” at 11 a.m.

Andy Okada’s popular “Wire Magic for Hanging Baskets” demo will be held on Friday, May 6, at 2 p.m. and Saturday, May 7, at 11 a.m.

Learn “How to Re-Bloom Your Orchid” with John Trevett on Friday at 2 p.m. and on Saturday at 11 a.m.

There will be a share hour with orchid photographer Semoia Lin on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
