Pianist Sarah Cahill to perform music by rarely heard composers

By Staff | Jun 4, 2015

While on Maui, pianist Sarah Cahill will also record works for Ebb & Flow Arts’ new CD project on the MIMM label.

MAKENA – On Saturday, June 13, at 7:30 p.m. at Keawalai Congregational Church, Ebb & Flow Arts will present Sarah Cahill in a solo piano recital.

The event is free. A pre-concert discussion starts at 6:30 p.m.

Cahill’s repertoire is very special. She will perform works by rarely heard composers, including Ruth Crawford Seeger’s “Preludes;” the jazz-influenced “Airplane Sonata” by “the bad boy of Trenton,” George Antheil; and a very recent work by Christine Southworth entitled “Sparkita and Her Kittens.”

In addition, the program will include explosive, groundbreaking music by Americans Terry Riley (composer of “In C”), Henry Cowell, Leo Ornstein, Marc Blitzstein and others.

“…. Her playing is tender yet firm, with a powerfully focused rhythmic palette that keeps the music from fading into vagueness,” noted critic Joshua Kosman of SFGate.

“Ms. Cahill has such a gentle demeanor that it can be hard to grasp the magnitude of her impact on the contemporary music scene – not only as a pianist but also as a champion of contemporary composers, a prolific events producer and an influential broadcaster of classical music,” wrote Chloe Veltman of The New York Times.

Berkeley, California pianist Cahill will offer a free Introduction to Modern Music workshop for children and their parents on Sunday, June 14, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Maui Music Conservatory on the second floor of Queen Ka’ahumanu Center.

“We are thrilled to present pianist Sarah Cahill,” said E&FA Executive Director Robert Pollock.

“Her vast repertoire of 20th and 21st century music fits our mission hand-in-glove.”

A meet the artist reception with complimentary food and beverages will follow the concert.

This event is part of E&FA’s NORTH SOUTH EAST WEST FESTIVAL 2015.

The festival is produced, in part, with support from the Makana Aloha Foundation, Aaron Copland Fund for Music, AHS Foundation, John R. Halligan Charitable Fund, Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and The Arts, Roger Shapiro Fund for New Music, Edward T. Cone Foundation, BMI Foundation, Kosasa Family Foundation (ABC Stores), Central Pacific Bank Foundation, Mayor Arakawa Community Kokua Fund, and private contributions.

Ebb & Flow Arts Inc. is a nonprofit presenter of modern music and multimedia events. The only such presenter in Hawaii, E&FA was founded in 1999 by composer/pianist Pollock.

It aims to build bridges between the arts and connect artistic expressions and cultures. E&FA creates a global soundboard and mirror for music and art in Hawaii.

The organization also teaches children how to read and write music with “Scaling Haleakala,” an original curriculum.
