Na Wai ‘Eha to play free concert

By Staff | Jan 29, 2015

Na Wai ‘Eha has been featured at Ocean’s Bar and Grill and Lulu’s Surf Bar and Grill, and the band has opened for music sensations The Green and ‘Ekolu at special events.

LAHAINA – Lahaina Restoration Foundation’s free monthly Hawaiian Music Series concerts are back by popular demand in 2015. On Thursday, Jan. 29, residents and visitors are invited to join the Central Maui group Na Wai ‘Eha on the Baldwin Home Museum lawn at the corner of Dickenson and Front streets from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for a laid-back evening.

Named Na Wai ‘Eha after the four sacred waters of Maui (Wailuku, Waikapu, Waiehu and Waihee), the band members have been performing together since 2011, when they were known as Righteous Youth.

They are the Kawa’a family and have strong community and cultural roots. Band leader Kamalei Kawa’a is 18, plays drums and ‘ukulele and sings vocals. Nineteen-year-old Kamalani Kawa’a is the vocalist for the group. She and her brother, Kamalei, have both competed in Hula O Na Keiki solo hula competition. Kamaehu Kawa’a is 16 and plays electric and upright bass, and Nawai Kala, 17, plays the ‘ukulele.

In the past year, Na Wai ‘Eha has been performing weekly at Kaanapali Beach Hotel. They play a variety of traditional and contemporary Hawaiian and island music, oldies and country tunes.

Limited seating is provided for kupuna; blankets, mats and low beach chairs are welcome. Call 661-3262.
