Mavis Staples to sing at the MACC

By Staff | Sep 18, 2014

VH1 named Mavis Staples one of the “100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll,” and Rolling Stone listed her as one of the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time.”

KAHULUI – Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner and National Heritage Fellowship Award recipient Mavis Staples will perform on Thursday, Sept. 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater.

Staples will perform with her band (drums, guitar, bass) and backup singers.

There are few living musicians who can lay claim to being the voice of America’s conscience.

For six decades, Staples has been the solid rock of American music with her rich, raspy voice, from the delta-inflected gospel sound she helped create in the 1950s (“Uncloudy Day”), to the engaged protest of the civil rights era (“Freedom Highway”) and then even on pop radio in the 1970s with a series of chart hits (“I’ll Take You There,” “Respect Yourself,” and “Let’s Do It Again”).

Her warm embrace of a voice has carried through all these changes in our lives and times.

Be there to witness an icon of music history! Tickets are $35, $45 or $65. Call 242-SHOW.
