Award-winning halau to compete at Ku Mai Ka Hula
KAHULUI – Ku Mai Ka Hula, the ninth annual hula competition featuring award-winning halau from Hawaii and the Mainland dancing in solo and group performances, will be held Sept. 12 and 13 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.
On Thursday, Sept. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the McCoy Studio, see the film “Celebrating Maui & Hula Through Rare Movies & Images.” Join Hula Preservation Society for a celebration of hula, featuring rare or never before seen footage from the Hula Preservation Society Archives of Maui’s hula and musical greats, as well as legendary Kumu Hula ‘Iolani Luahine.
In Ku Mai Ka Hula, the dancers compete in kahiko (traditional) and ‘auana (modern day) hula stylings in both male and female categories, judged by renowned kumu hula.
Enjoy three days of inspiring and memorable hula presentations – as you might expect to see in more well-known competitions – without the interisland travel!
On Friday, Sept. 12, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Castle Theater, the contest will feature solo competitions, with dancers vying for the title of Mr. and Ms. Hula Maui.
Saturday, Sept. 13, will feature group halau competitions for Wahine Kahiko & ‘Auana, Kane Kahiko & ‘Auana, and Kupuna ‘Auana from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Castle Theater.
Tickets for Thursday’s film are $10. Admission for the Friday and Saturday performances are $25 each; a two-day competition special ticket costs $37. Tickets are half-price for keiki 12 and under. Call the MACC Box Office at 242-SHOW.
