Vocal legend Mavis Staples coming to the MACC

By Staff | Aug 21, 2014

Mavis Staples is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner and a National Heritage Fellowship Award recipient. VH1 named her one of the 100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll, and Rolling Stone listed her as one of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.

KAHULUI – There are few living musicians who can lay claim to being the voice of America’s conscience. One of the contenders for this role is certainly Mavis Staples, who will perform for the first time at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater on Thursday, Sept. 25, at 7:30 p.m.

With her rich, raspy voice, Staples has been a solid rock of American music for six decades, from the delta-inflected gospel sound she helped create in the 1950s (“Uncloudy Day”) to the engaged protest of the Civil Rights Era (“Freedom Highway”), and even on pop radio in the 1970s with a series of chart hits (“I’ll Take You There,” “Respect Yourself,” “Let’s Do It Again”). Her warm vocal embrace has carried through all these changes in our lives and times.

Tickets are $35, $45 or $65 plus applicable fees. Tickets for MACC members went on sale on Aug. 15. Tickets will go on sale to the public on Friday, Aug. 22, at 10 a.m. Call the MACC Box Office at 242-SHOW or visit www.MauiArts.org.
