Sitar maestro to perform in ‘East Marries West’

By Staff | Sep 12, 2013

The duo’s effortless musical communication and improvisation have captivated audiences at concert halls and festivals across the world.

KAHULUI – Shubendra Rao, a protg of world-renowned Pandit Ravi Shankar, is described as a “brilliant light for the tradition of the sitar.” On Thursday, Sept. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the McCoy Studio Theater at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, sitar maestro Rao and cello virtuoso Saskia Rao-de Haas will prove that the music of East and West are ready for an abiding relationship with their concert program “East Marries West.”

The celebrated husband and wife duo have created a new musical language that is both avant garde and traditional at once. Combining artistic depth and technical virtuosity, they create their own music that tests the boundaries of the rich texture of classical Indian music.

Indian and Western classical music traditions, folk traditions from different parts of the world and exciting rhythms are some of the inspirations for their compositions. Audiences and critics are spellbound not only by the brilliance of both individual musicians, but also by the energy and freshness that the couple bring to their concerts.

“(S)uch was the stirring performance that many in the audience were moved to tears,” a Newstime critic wrote.

“This duet is taking Indian Music into a brave new era,” noted a Gateway Magazine writer in India.

The Raos’ remarkable musical journey has already taken them to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.; National Arts Festival in South Africa; Musee Guimet in Paris; Edinburgh Festivals in Scotland; Esplanade in Singapore; and the Legends of India in New Delhi.

Now this extraordinary music comes to Maui, for one night only! Tickets for this unique sitar/cello concert experience are $22 – $11 for kids 12 and under – with a discount available to MACC annual donors.
