‘Damien’ play to be performed in Lahaina

Vinnie Linares will perform “Damien” for the first time in West Maui on Aug. 10 at 7 p.m. at Holy Innocents Episcopal Church in Lahaina.
LAHAINA – “Damien,” a one-man show about Saint Damien, minister among the lepers of Molokai, will be staged in Lahaina on Saturday, Aug. 10.
Vinnie Linares, a retired English professor at the University of Hawaii Maui College, has been performing Aldyth Morris’ play about Father Damien since 2000.
He has taken his one-man show to various locations around Hawaii, to the Mainland and to Edinburgh, Scotland, but never before to West Maui.
Holy Innocents Episcopal Church in Lahaina will host the performance at 7 p.m. Tickets are available for $10 at the door or online at www.holyimaui.org.
Holy Innocents Episcopal Church is located at 561 Front St. For more information, call 661-4202.
The play highlights significant moments in the turbulent life of Father Damien, who treated lepers as patients instead of outcasts.
A writer at The Maui News noted, “‘Damien’ performed by Linares is more than theater. It is an affirmation of how powerful devotion can be.”
