During Junior Ranger Day from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, keiki can meet rangers and learn about their work in Haleakala National Park.

HALEAKALA – True or false? The Haleakala Silversword plant is found only at Haleakala and nowhere else on Earth. Haleakala is the third largest mountain on the planet. The summit of Haleakala was once a training site for young kilo hoku (navigators).

Enter the park free of charge Monday through Friday of National Park Week. Numerous free programs will be offered in the Summit and Kipahulu districts.

You can try your luck playing National Park Trivia at any park visitor center. (In the above questions, all are true!)

In the Junior Ranger Program at the Summit, keiki ages 7-12 can learn about the park through completing a free activity booklet and earning a badge. This will be offered daily.

Meet at the House of the Sun Visitor Center for Hike Pa Ka’oao. Offered at 10 and 11 a.m. daily, this 20-minute hike leads to a wonderful view of the crater.

The three-mile, three-and-a-half-hour Waikamoi Preserve Hike focuses on the history, plants and animals of the area. Call 572-4400 for reservations; hikes are slated for 8:45 a.m. on April 22 and 25.

Experience the home of native plants and rare birds on the 45-minute Hosmer Grove Hike. Call 572-4400 for reservations. Hikes are scheduled for 1 and 2 p.m. on April 23, 24, 26 and 27.

Junior Ranger Day is set for noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 27. Not all rangers do the same work, wear the same uniform or use the same tools. Meet park rangers and discover the different jobs that they do at Hosmer Grove.

Join a park naturalist on a two-hour guided hike along Pipiwai Trail for views of Makahiku Falls and Waimoku Falls daily from 10 a.m. to noon. Meet at the Kipahulu Visitor Center; reservations are not required.

Join park staff at the Taro Festival in Hana from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 20.

And experience Hawaii through participating in cultural demonstrations from noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24, and Friday, April 26. Meet at the Kipahulu Visitor Center.
