Broadway stars to sing favorites at ‘Broadway Pops’

By Staff | Jan 10, 2013

Elizabeth Southard has been a guest soloist with orchestras, including the Pittsburgh Symphony with Marvin Hamlisch, the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Anchorage Symphony and the Flagstaff Symphony. She also toured throughout Germany and performed at the Opera Comique in Paris.

KAHULUI – Broadway stars Gary Mauer and Elizabeth Southard will light up the stage when they join the Maui Pops Orchestra for an afternoon of great songs in “Broadway Pops” at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 20, at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater.

The two stars of the Broadway production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s international sensation, “The Phantom Of the Opera,” will present a collection of memorable Broadway songs from hit shows such as “Les Miserables,” “Show Boat,” “West Side Story” and “Chicago.”

Mauer and Southard have worked extensively in musical theater, on Broadway and in national tours. The two, who are married and have two children, sang the lead roles of Christine and the Phantom in the Broadway production of “Phantom.” They also starred in the first national tour of the Harold Prince revival of “Show Boat.”

The Maui audience will hear Mauer and Southard, in duets and solos, sing such stage classics as “Begin the Beguine,” “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “I Got Rhythm,” “Till There Was You,” “Anything You Can Do,” “All That Jazz” and a “Show Boat” medley.

Drawing on their “Phantom” experience, the pair will sing a duet of “Phantom of the Opera,” and Mauer will sing “Music of the Night.”

In addition to accompanying the guest artists, the Maui Pops Orchestra, under the direction of Conductor and Music Director James Durham, will perform “76 Trombones” and the overtures to “Gypsy” and to “West Side Story.”

Along with their work together, Mauer and Southard have performed as individual artists in a number of productions.

For Mauer, these include national tours of “Les Miserables” and “The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber.” He has played Jesus in “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Anthony in “Sweeney Todd” and Frederick in “Pirates of Penzance.”

As part of the popular “Bravo Broadway!” concert series, he has sung with numerous symphonies across the country, including Cleveland, Utah, and Peter Nero and the Philly Pops, and has traveled extensively with Marvin Hamlisch and joined Hamlisch with the Chicago and Pittsburgh Symphonies.

His solo CD project, “This is the Moment,” was released in the fall of 2007, and he is featured on the CDs “Bravo Broadway!” and “Broadway’s Fabulous Phantoms.”

As well as starring as “Phantom’s” Christine on Broadway, Southard also performed the role in the Vancouver, B.C., production and the national tour. She was seen off-Broadway in Jack Eric William’s “Swamp Gas and Shallow Feelings” and toured as Christine in the Yeston/Kopit “Phantom” and in “The Sound of Music” with Marie Osmond.
