KAHULUI – Art21 will show “Balance” at 6 p.m. today, Thursday, July 5, in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s McCoy Studio Theater. Admission is free.

Art21 illuminates the creative process of today’s visual artists through the production of films, interpretive media and live programs that stimulate critical reflection and conversation.

Tonight’s one-hour video program called “Balance” asks, “In what ways can art convey equilibrium or disequilibrium?” “What is reality, and how do artists perceive and express it?”

Featuring Rackstraw Downes, Robert Mangold and Sarah Sze, this episode’s art explores the distinctions between balance and imbalance, and demonstrate that the smallest change in a line, a formal element or a structure can be a radical proposition.

On Thursday, July 12, at 6 p.m., “History” will be screened.

“History” asks, “How do artists mine the past to explore the present?” “In what ways do artists use their own histories to examine the human condition?”

Artists Marina Abramovic, Glenn Ligon and Mary Reid Kelley play with historical events, explore and expose commonly held assumptions about truth and create narratives based on personal experiences.
