By Staff | Jun 7, 2012

Maui Jam (above) and the Na Kupuna `Ohana Serenaders will perform at this month’s Concert in the Park.

LAHAINA – Selected by Coastal Living as one of America’s “Happiest Seaside Towns,” noted as one of the top 25 destinations in the U.S. by Trip Advisor and designated a “Great Street in America” by the American Planning Association, we truly are “Lucky We Live Lahaina.”

Join the merchants of historic Lahaina Town as they celebrate these accolades at the Second Friday Town Party on June 8 from 6 to 9 p.m.

This family-friendly party will feature food and drink specials at restaurants and eateries, the renowned “Art Night,” a free concert in Campbell Park, outdoor movies and shopping.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. with a blessing by the cast of ‘Ulalena at the sea wall adjacent to Hard Rock Cafe.

This month’s Concert in the Park presented by LahainaTown Action Committee at Campbell Park next to the Baldwin Home on Front Street will feature Maui Jam from 5 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m., and the Na Kupuna `Ohana Serenaders from 6 to 7 p.m.

LAC works together with Lahaina restaurants to sponsor several West Side keiki non-profits. This assistance allows the non-profits – Waiola Church, Lahaina Canoe Club’s Keiki Program, West Maui Boys & Girls Club, Na Ki’a i O Waine’e, Lahaina Swim Club, Soroptimist International of West Maui and the Lahainaluna High School Wrestling Team this month – to fundraise.

Campbell Park will come alive with ono grinds, baked goods, desserts, coffee and live music. This month’s sponsors include Betty’s Beach Cafe, Kimo’s, Leilani’s on the Beach, MauiGrown Coffee Store, Island Froyo and Spanky’s Rip Tide.

Next door at The Wharf Cinema Center, there will be live music on center stage from 5 to 7 p.m.

Restaurants around town will also have live music, including Nuff Sedd at Kimo’s from 8 to 10 p.m. (free admission coupons are available at the Lahaina Visitor Center to the first 30 people); Visibly Shaken from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m. at Moose McGillycuddy’s Lahaina; Evan Shulman from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hard Rock Cafe’s “Patio Party;” Gary Larson’s “Jazz in The Courtyard” at The Shops at 505 Front Street; Bob Jones and the Drive from 8 to 10:30 p.m. at Captain Jack’s Island Grill; and Johnny Ringo from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at Cool Cat Cafe.

Hula Rock will have live Hawaiian music from 5 to 9 p.m., Longhi’s will host jazz from 7 to 10 p.m. and the Pioneer Inn will have live music from 6 to 9 p.m.

On Second Friday, explore Lahaina’s unique history with Lahaina Restoration Foundation’s “Ha’ina Hou – Let the Story Be Told,” with fun activities at the Baldwin Home and Wo Hing Museum on Front Street.

Enjoy a free performance by Maui Taiko at the Wo Hing Museum, 858 Front St., from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Maui Taiko, a nonprofit organization, was established to perpetuate traditional Japanese folk songs through the art of Taiko (Japanese drumming). The current group includes 50 members ranging in age from eight to 65.

The Baldwin Home Museum at the corner of Front and Dickenson streets will host a ‘Ohana Movie Night, featuring two 20-minute films from “Na Maka o ka ‘Aina” starting at 7:30 p.m.

See “Ka Wai – Source of Life,” which shares the true wealth and value of water to the Hawaiian people. “Ho’ala Hou – A Look to the Future,” hosted by Sam Ka’ai, reflects the Pacific way of self-sufficiency and preserving Hawaii’s cultural heritage.

In addition, LRF’s popular candlelit tour of the Baldwin Home will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at a special “Ha’ina Hou” admission of $5 per person, which also includes a tour of the Wo Hing Museum. Children accompanied by a paying adult are free. Call 661-3262 or visit www.lahainarestoration.org.
