‘David Malo Day’ set for April 13

By Staff | Mar 18, 2024

Lahainaluna High School’s Papa Hula O Lahainaluna (formerly Hawai’iana Club) and the Boarders’ Chorus proudly present its 2024 annual “David Malo Day” on Saturday, April 13, 2024. The annual campus event on Boarders’ Field celebrates the legacy of its first honored graduate David Malo who was noted as an educator and historian to name a few accolades.

Its theme this year is “I Ka Malu’ulu O Lele” (Under the shade of the ‘ulu tree, we look forward to the return of our Lele). It will also celebrate the resiliency and strength of the Lahaina community and the mahalo to the many alumni and community members who have offered to keep the spirit of Lahaina moving forward after the devasting August fire.

The sunset event will feature a pa’ina (dinner) at 5:00 p.m. followed by entertainment at 6:00 p.m. in songs and dances of the islands from the ‘olapa (dancers) of Papa Hula O Lahainaluna and the leo (voices) of the Boarders’ Chorus. They are under the direction of kumu Jaime Eva Palakiko and her husband Danny Palakiko. Parking on campus is limited, so carpooling is recommended.

This event will also be an opportunity for classes to celebrate their class reunions, particularly classes ending with 4 and 9. If your class has not registered a class leader with Palakiko, you are asked to make contact immediately. Class leaders are asked to obtain an accurate count of ticketed classmates attending and give the final count to Kumu Palakiko by April 5th so the planning committee can arrange for reunion reserved tables. Open seating for all others.

Tickets for dinner can be reserved via https://tinyurl.com/Malo2024 or call Palakiko at (808) 276-3267 or email jaime.palakiko@k12.hi.us. Leave a clear message with your name and phone contact for a call back.
